ALICE NEEL

Alice Neel was one of the great portrait painters of the 20thcentury. She reinvented the genre of portraiture by expressing the inner landscape of her varied sitters, among them Andy Warhol, Annie Sprinkle, Bella Abzug, and Allen Ginsberg. Painting a diverse cross- section of humanity, from Communist Party leaders to art world personalities to her neighbors in Spanish Harlem, Neel created a bodyof work that serves as a social document of New York and America in the 20th Century. Communal Living

2000-2001

KALIFLOWER COMMUNE, SAN FRANCISCO

I came back from India and Burma and needed a place to live. I walked around and saw a building I liked. Knocked on the door and this little elf with a long beard answered the door. Irving Rosenthal beat editor and Chicago Review, Big Table. We soon had lunch- it became a very close and dear relationship. I moved in. I lived in the commune and did all types of communal things. Fed the poor, collected books, made art, sewed, cooked vegan, performed, and participated in many of the outreach programs. One was providing literature and books to inmates incarcerated in prison. It was in the commune that I became familiar and fell in love with Jack Smiths works. I decided to move to NY and do a film about him.
